ATLAS co-sponsors A Contemplation on the Education of Black Male Students with
Wheelock College in Boston, June 3-5, 2007.

“Haunted by the specter of a bleak future for millions of young men and aware that single-gender programs can face legal and political opposition—two dozen principals were nonetheless united in their conviction that it is high time to build education programs that meet the academic and emotional needs of black boys.” The conference enabled school leaders to share promising practices, explored ways of shaping curriculum and pedagogy, as well as ways that teachers can serve as disciplinarians and role models for their students.

In Whole-School Reform, Staying True to Model Matters
Study shows models’ practices also spread to other schools.


In a federal study conducted by researchers at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) “staying true to a model matters”. The research cites ATLAS because it “stood out for its progress in building social capital.” Social capital fosters an atmosphere in which teachers expressed a feeling of collegiality, collaborated in lesson planning, took part in extensive professional development activities and shared a sense of mission for their schools.
